Almond and coconut or hazelnut and cacao: which balls do I pick?

The almond and coconut version from Kazidomi runs on dates at 58.8% and almonds at 33%, with sesame, coconut and cocoa powder: gentle, finishing on grated coconut. The hazelnut and cacao recipe is more chocolatey and more roasted. Both come in a 36 g bag, and both are vegan.

Is there added sugar in these balls?

No, nothing of the kind appears on the list: the sweetness comes from the dates alone, which make up 58.8% of the recipe. Kazidomi fills out the rest with almonds, cocoa powder, sesame, coconut and a pinch of salt. No preservative and no colouring go into the composition.

Why do I sometimes bite on something hard?

The Kazidomi label warns that the product may contain pieces of stone: the dates are pitted by machine and a fragment occasionally gets through. Take the first bite gently. This is not a manufacturing fault but the trade-off of a recipe made from whole fruit ground down.

Which allergens do these balls contain?

Almonds and sesame, both in the recipe, with possible traces of peanuts and other tree nuts. The Kazidomi balls are not presented as gluten-free. They are organic and vegan, made in Belgium, with no ingredient of animal origin anywhere on the list.

How long do they keep once the bag is open?

Two days at most at room temperature, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun. The 36 g Kazidomi bag holds one portion, so the sensible move is to finish it there and then. Folded shut, it stops the dates drying out and the balls hardening on the surface.
