How does this differ from a plain almond butter?

Its make-up. Pulse Protein blends 82.5% roasted almonds with 12% pea protein and 5.5% virgin rapeseed oil, which takes the jar to 28% protein. A plain almond butter is only the ground nut and nothing more. Here the protein content is the whole point of the recipe.

What texture should I expect?

The 5.5% virgin rapeseed oil keeps this Pulse Protein almond butter soft and easy to spread. Some oil can still rise to the top when the jar has been standing, and a turn of the knife puts that right. The pea protein gives the paste slightly more body than a nut-only spread.

How do I use it?

On toast with fresh fruit, stirred through porridge, or blended into a smoothie. It also works in cookie dough and in home-made energy balls, where it stands in for an ordinary nut butter. The Pulse Protein jar holds 350 g, so a spoonful a morning lasts a good while.

What exactly is in the jar?

Three organically grown ingredients: roasted almonds, pea protein and virgin rapeseed oil. Pulse Protein adds no sugar, no salt, no flavouring and no preservative. The short list makes it easy to check for nuts where somebody in the house reacts to them. The jar is made in the Netherlands.

How do I store it once opened?

At room temperature, in a dry cupboard away from light, with the lid screwed firmly back on. The fridge would make this Pulse Protein almond butter very stiff and hard to lift out of the jar. Use a clean knife each time so no moisture and no crumbs get in.
